Mortal Kombat 1 is introducing a new fighter. Takeda Takahashi, a character last seen in Mortal Kombat X, will be available for Kombat Pack owners on July 23, and for everyone else on July 30, as announced by NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Games on Monday.
In this latest installment, Takeda Takahashi has a reworked backstory. While in Mortal Kombat X he was portrayed as Kenshi’s son, in Mortal Kombat 1 he is now Kenshi’s cousin. The new storyline depicts him as someone who was sent to take down Kenshi for the yakuza, but ended up being critically injured. After recovering as Kenshi’s prisoner, he adopted the Shirai Ryu fighting style and now uses their moveset in combat.
Takeda showcases his skills by using serrated whips, throwing explosive kunai, and teleporting behind enemies. His fatality involves using his whips to crush his opponent, leaving gaping wounds before retracting them. The game stays true to the Mortal Kombat style with intense and bloody combat.
Accessible through the Kombat Pack, which includes other playable characters like Omni-Man from Invincible, Quan Chi, Peacemaker from the DCEU, Ermac, and Homelander from The Boys, Takeda is part of the Premium Edition or can be purchased individually.
Additionally, Warner Bros. announced the release of Kameo Fighter Ferra, a support character, on July 23. Though not mentioned in the trailer, the delay was to ensure she is well-prepared to assist players effectively. Both Takeda and Ferra will be playable at the upcoming fighting game tournament, Evo, starting on July 19.
Other Kameo Fighters featured in the game include Tremor, Khameleon, Janet Cage, and Mavado.
