Despite some challenges in recent years, the mobile games industry continues to show signs of growth and stability according to the latest State of Mobile Gaming report by data.ai.
In 2023, seven mobile games reached the $1 billion lifetime earnings milestone, the second-highest number after 2021’s record of nine games reaching this achievement. This ties with 2020 and surpasses the pre-pandemic average. Additionally, 1,511 apps reached $10 million in revenue, beating the 2021 record, with 924 of those apps being mobile games.
Consumer spending on mobile games has seen an increase, especially in regions like South Korea. The average spending on mobile games per user in South Korea has risen steadily over the past years, with significant increases observed on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
According to data.ai’s report, established games continue to lead in revenue, and consumer spending on new releases is gaining momentum in key markets such as the US, Canada, the UK, China, Japan, and South Korea.
For example, the US saw a significant increase in average spending on new releases, and South Korean players spent more money on new releases than old ones in 2023.
