In the first half of 2024 alone, mobile app downloads exceeded 110 billion, marking a 9% increase from the second half of 2023.
According to the latest State of Mobile Market H1 2024 report by Apptica, a leading app intelligence company, spending also rose by 4.5%, surpassing $50 billion across mobile apps and games.
Combined, Apple and Android markets generated $23.8 billion in game revenue.
The success was driven by strong performances in India, Brazil, Argentina, and various European countries, offsetting declines in China and Japan. Android dominated the downloads market, while Apple saw a decline in installs, revealing clear preferences in different regions.
Differences in Downloads
India stood out with 4.7 billion mobile game installs on Android in H1 2024, a 6% increase from H2 2023, making it the largest market for mobile game downloads globally.
In comparison, iOS saw only 56.5 million game downloads in India, ranking 15th among Apple’s markets.
Brazil and Russia followed in Android game downloads, with 4.31 billion and 1.92 billion installs respectively, showing increases from the previous half-year. Globally, Android game downloads grew by 7%, totaling over 27 billion.
Apple’s share of downloads was smaller, declining by 5% globally to around 3.2 billion installs, significantly lower than Android’s numbers.
Revenue Trends
Android users spent over $10 billion on mobile games in H1 2024, a 4.6% increase from the previous period. The US led spending at $2.93 billion, followed by Japan and South Korea.
On Android, video games outperformed other apps in revenue, while Apple users spent more on non-gaming apps.
Despite lower download rates, Apple’s App Store saw over $13.8 billion in mobile game spending, with China leading in spending, followed by the US and Japan.
These top three territories accounted for 69% of the total spending on the App Store’s mobile games.
“AI technologies are driving more sophisticated data analysis, enabling personalized content and services that enhance user satisfaction and engagement,” said Apptica client success manager Jamie Lou Borile.
“The mobile app market is becoming more competitive, with personalization as a key differentiator in attracting and retaining users.”
