Midjourney, the AI image-generating platform that has reportedly generated over $200 million in revenue without any VC investment, is now expanding into hardware ventures.
The company announced its new hardware team based in San Francisco in a post on X recently.
A potential hint about the hardware projects Midjourney, with a team of less than 100 employees, may undertake can be found in their hiring of Ahmad Abbas, a former Neuralink staffer who helped engineer Apple’s mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, in February.
Midjourney CEO David Holz, who also co-founded Leap Motion, a company specializing in motion-tracking peripherals, is familiar with hardware projects. Abbas and Holz previously worked together at Leap Motion.
Despite facing lawsuits related to its AI training methods, Midjourney continues to focus on developing AI models for video and 3D generation. It is speculated that the hardware projects could be connected to these ongoing efforts.
