Microsoft Teams is testing a new design that integrates channels and text chat into one user interface, similar to Slack. This change could streamline text communication for organizations and businesses, as highlighted by The Verge’s Tom Warren in his Notebook newsletter post.
An internal Microsoft message mentioned that the new experience merges chats and channels to prioritize what matters most for users.
While the release date for this new design is not confirmed, it is anticipated to be available soon. Currently, Microsoft Teams segregates features into chats for larger meetings, one-on-one interactions, and small groups.
Once the new design is ready, it will likely be tested by Teams Public Preview program users before being rolled out to the general public.
Microsoft has enhanced Teams with features like 3D emojis, live interpretation, and Copilot, which integrates more AI into calls and chats gradually.
For instance, Copilot analyzes meeting insights and chat transcripts to provide users with a better understanding of the conversation. Teams also offer features like customizing backgrounds, appearing active constantly, and various other hidden tips and tricks.
Despite these improvements, Teams still faces tough competition from Slack in terms of user preference. Only time will tell if Teams can make enough changes to surpass Slack decisively.
