“Even though it sticks a little too close to Persona, Metaphor: ReFantazio turned me into a loyal follower.”
Pros
- Memorable characters
- Inventive travel system
- Excellent art direction
- Engaging battle system
Cons
- Predictable story
- Bland dungeon design
When faced with a giant egg boss and the need to crack its shell for damage, I pondered how Metaphor: ReFantazio would distinguish itself from Persona. This thought recurred during my playthrough.
Metaphor’s Followers resemble Persona’s social elements, and the Archetype systems mirror Personas that characters use for flashy attacks. Despite similarities, Metaphor’s likable cast, refined combat, and captivating art direction make it a worthwhile experience for RPG fans.
A new era of rulers
Metaphor: ReFantazio follows a blue-haired protagonist and fairy companion Gallica in a tournament to determine the next ruler of Euchronia after the king’s death. The protagonist carries a fantasy book depicting an egalitarian society akin to modern Japan amidst monstrous beings known as Humans. The story unfolds around reawakening a cursed prince to reclaim his throne.
