Say farewell to inferior imitations! The beloved mobile game, Flappy Bird, has been absent from smartphones since 2014. However, thanks to dedicated fans, it is set to make a triumphant return.
Announced by The Flappy Bird Foundation, a group of fans who acquired the trademark, along with Kek, the developer behind the inspiration for Flappy Bird, Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the game is officially scheduled for release in 2025. Fans can expect to enjoy an enhanced version of the notoriously challenging mobile platformer on iOS, Android, desktop, and web browsers.
First launched in 2013, Flappy Bird quickly rose to fame in 2014 as one of the most popular apps on both iOS and Android platforms. Players must tap the screen to navigate a bird through obstacles by moving it up and down. The game’s popularity peaked, generating an estimated $50,000 daily from in-app advertisements, as reported by The Verge.
“It’s been a long and complex journey, but we are thrilled to finally reintroduce Flappy Bird to the world,” stated Chief Creative Michael Roberts in a press release.
The new version of the game promises additional game modes, characters, worlds, and online challenges. The goal is to modernize and enhance the game while retaining its original appeal. For players like myself who struggled to progress past the initial levels, the new features will offer a fresh and engaging experience.
This revival of Flappy Bird is a significant development, considering the history of the game. In 2014, developer Dong Nguyen announced on Twitter that he would be removing the game from app stores due to its addictive nature. Clones emerged following its removal, accounting for a substantial portion of new iOS games.
Nguyen indicated to Forbes that he decided to take down Flappy Bird because it had become addictive. “To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever,” he stated. Since then, the game has been absent from app stores.
