Today marks the launch of the networking app BeScene, designed to provide filmmakers and other creatives in the entertainment industry with a Tinder-like experience to help create meaningful connections.
Breaking into the film and media sector has always been a daunting task, with platforms like Staff Me Up, Backstage, Mandy, and ProductionHUB offering specialized career sites to facilitate the process. BeScene aims to cater not only to established professionals but also to low-budget, student, and aspiring filmmakers who may struggle to make industry connections.
Founder and CEO George Armistead expresses, “Our mission is to democratize access to the industry for individuals who may not have had traditional pathways. In 2024, we believe that no one should be excluded from their dreams due to lack of resources or location. BeScene aims to remove barriers to entry established by the traditional Hollywood system.”
BeScene differentiates itself by integrating the swipe right/swipe left mechanics into professional networking, offering a familiar and intuitive platform for users to connect authentically.
The app presents a simple interface with core features including an in-app messenger, connection discovery section, and a network management page. Users can filter potential connections based on roles, projects, location, and preferences, emphasizing mutual connections for relevance.
BeScene offers a seamless onboarding process, welcoming individuals without the need for extensive industry credentials. While this opens doors for aspiring filmmakers, it may also require additional due diligence in vetting connections to ensure a positive experience.
Users have the ability to report or block violators of BeScene’s terms, with the company actively monitoring and taking appropriate actions to maintain a safe environment.
Looking ahead, BeScene plans to introduce new features like an explore page, a post feed, and community creation options, with in-app purchases and other revenue streams on the horizon. The platform aims to expand its reach beyond film professionals to include content creators, musicians, and athletes.
BeScene is currently available for free download on iOS and Android devices in the U.S. and Canada, with ambitions for global expansion in the near future. Over 7,200 individuals are already on the waiting list for the app.
Armistead’s journey began with the launch of ReelCall in 2021, where he collaborated with fellow USC alum Francesca Aiassa-Hernandez to address networking challenges in the film industry, paving the way for BeScene’s creation.
While BeScene has yet to secure external funding, the company raised $250,000 from friends and family in 2022 and is exploring opportunities for a pre-seed round.
