The video games industry in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is experiencing rapid growth, driven by significant investments that are reshaping how games are developed.
Prior to the Dubai GameExpo Summit powered by Pocket Gamer Connects on May 1st and 2nd, we had the opportunity to speak with key founders of leading games companies in MENA, including Nour Khrais, CEO of Maysalward; Hussam Hammo, CEO of Tamatem Games; and Vince Ghossoub, co-founder of Falafel Games and Nifty Craft. Our discussions focused on the transformative impact of substantial gaming investments from Saudi Arabia and Savvy Games Group.
According to Khrais, the investments from KSA and Savvy Games Group have not only elevated Saudi Arabia as a gaming hub but have also inspired other countries in the region to recognize the economic potential of the gaming industry. This has led to a growing trend of increased investment in gaming from neighboring countries in MENA, signaling a broader acknowledgment of the industry’s importance for economic diversification and innovation.
Hammo acknowledges that the investments have attracted global developers and publishers to MENA, although most of the investments came from outside the region. He hopes to see more direct investments within the region using its own resources, fostering growth and innovation locally.
They’ve put the region in the limelight and reinvigorated existing initiatives.
Vince Ghossoub, Falafel Games & Nifty Craft
Ghossoub believes that the investments have instilled confidence in the private sector in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, illuminating the potential for the gaming industry’s growth. These investments have also revitalized existing initiatives, such as those in Abu Dhabi, with tangible outcomes expected to materialize gradually.
Khrais underscores the importance of collaboration between countries in advancing the gaming industry. By forming partnerships with neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Jordan can leverage its talent and innovation to access resources and investment opportunities, ultimately driving innovation and talent development across the MENA region.
As collaboration strengthens individual gaming sectors within each country, it also contributes to the broader economic and cultural development of MENA as a whole.
