Magmic has unveiled a Web3 mobile and web game based on the MLB license. The title will be an “idle tycoon” style game where you can become a baseball magnate.
The Ottawa, Canada-based developer and publisher announced the mobile game at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
The company unveiled the game at an exclusive invitation-only game reveal party during the show. A closed beta test of the new game is coming soon.
The new game marks Magmic’s foray into the Web3 realm, said Mo Agha, CEO of Magmic, in an interview with GamesBeat.

“We’re developing an idle tycoon game using the Major League Baseball license,” Agha said. “We’re simulating playing a baseball game, and then you build a ballpark to play baseball. You’re managing businesses which would fall into that kind of idle mechanic. And then through that you’re building an awesome ballpark.”
He unveiled the strategic partnership and licensing agreement with MLB for the development of a tycoon-style management mobile and web video game, offering players control over their digital collections within Magmic’s custodial platform.
“We are thrilled to host a party during GDC and reveal our new game,” said Agha. “It is Magmic’s vision and commitment to create an enjoyable gaming experience while also allowing true in-game asset ownership that truly sets it apart in the new world of Web3 gaming.”
With a legacy of innovation dating back to its inception in 2002, Magmic said it has continually pushed the boundaries of mobile game development. The company’s early adoption of Web3 technology and integration of NFTs into titles like Passport Rummy laid the groundwork for its latest venture into the Web3 gaming space.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of the successful launch of UFC Fight Card Rummy, a real-money skill game that combines the classic appeal of Rummy with UFC sports branding.
Magmic has more than 250 million game downloads and a loyal player base spanning two decades. The company has produced more than 100 mobile games including Scattergories Blitz and Passport Rummy. Its first Web3 game was Idle Pet Paradise.
The MLB game is expected to launch in late 2024.
The title will be built on Web3 tech and your players will be tradeable. But the game can be played as a free-to-play Web2 title. That makes it more acceptable to mobile platforms like Google and Apple, as those platforms can still get their cut of royalties. Most revenue is expected to come in via Web2 players, and those purchases are handled through standard app store payment systems.
“We’re using blockchain as a technology, not as a business model, steering away from that pump-and-dump of the last few years,” Agha said. “Our goal with this brand here is to make sure that you have a positive experience. This is about ownership. It isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme.”
As for the Web3 gaming market, Agha feels like it’s a “dynamic time,” with life coming back into the cryptocurrency markets.
The company has 36 people.
