Life is Strange has always been praised for its intricate character development and storytelling. The latest installment, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, continues this trend with a compelling narrative that unfolds in a 60-minute PAX West demo. As protagonist Max Caufield navigates her new universe-hopping abilities, the high stakes and tension drew me into her latest adventure.
Double Exposure serves as a direct sequel to the original Life is Strange, where Max, now a college-aged photography student at Caledon University, discovers a dark mystery after the death of her close friend, Safi. Alongside the engaging premise, Max’s new Shift power, puzzle-solving elements, and impactful choices make Double Exposure an emotionally immersive interactive experience.
Double Exposure does not establish any of the original Life is Strange endings as canon, but Max’s decision to refrain from using her Rewind power remains consistent. Upon discovering her evolved Shift power, which allows her to traverse parallel universes, Max is determined to unravel Safi’s murder. The demo kicks off with a tense scenario where Max must use her new power to clear her friend Moses of suspicion.
The gameplay introduces the concept of shifting power, with glimmers of light indicating potential time rips for Max to manipulate. From evading detectives to interacting with her friends, the shifting dynamic adds depth to Max’s relationships and the unfolding mystery.
Similar to previous titles in the series, Double Exposure features branching narratives. The demo concludes with a pivotal decision for Max, emphasizing the impact of player choices on the narrative flow. The blend of impactful choices and supernatural elements sets the stage for a compelling storyline in the full game.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure is set to launch on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 29, promising an engaging continuation of Max’s journey into adulthood with a supernatural twist.
