How did you initially break into the games industry?
Kevine Nzayanga: I transitioned from the communication industry to software development after attending a coding bootcamp. My interest in Usiku Games, a company I admired, led me to a project using my HTML5 skills. This experience paved the way for a full-time position with the company.
What was your typical day like at Usiku Games?
As a hybrid game developer, I enjoyed starting my day with coffee before collaborating on tasks and discussing coding practices with colleagues. This routine helped me balance work and personal life effectively.
Why did you choose a career in games, and what would you have pursued if not in games?
“If I hadn’t found my way into the games industry, I likely would have pursued a career in the non-profit sector.”
Kevine Nzayanga
I discovered my passion for creating enjoyable experiences for players with a focus on gender-focused humanitarian activities. Without the games industry, I would have pursued a career in the non-profit sector.
How do you balance your love for game and software development in your career?
My passion for video games and software development align well, allowing me to continuously improve my skills as a game developer. The synergy between the two fields enhances my abilities and productivity.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I’m proud of learning new frameworks and contributing to around 10 games during my journey. Seeing these games on platforms and knowing I played a part in their development brings me immense joy.
If you could play one video game forever, what would it be and why?
If I had to choose one game to play forever, it would be Extreme Off Road Racing for its thrilling gameplay experience.
Any advice for women pursuing a career in games or struggling with work?
“From my experience, sharing my views and projects was one of the key reasons I landed my role.”
Kevine Nzayanga
For women in the industry, I encourage them to have confidence in their work and share their accomplishments. It’s important to stay determined in a male-dominated field. For those facing challenges, remember that it gets better and use the opportunity to realign with your goals.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Economics and Management of IT while developing an educational game. I aim to create projects that combine gaming with humanitarian activities to raise awareness about accessible higher education.
