Jio, an India conglomerate, has announced a partnership with MediaTek, a Taiwanese semiconductor giant, to provide digital dashboards for the growing electric scooter market.
This collaboration will see MediaTek supplying chips and an Android-based operating system, combined with hardware developed by Jio, powering the instrument clusters for electric scooters in India and potentially in other emerging markets. These clusters are powered by MediaTek’s MT8766 and MT8768 system-on-chips, running on the Android-based AvniOS platform.
The partnership comes at a time when India aims to have 100% of two-wheeler sales driven by electric vehicles by 2030, making it a lucrative opportunity for both companies.
Jio plans to capitalize on this partnership by offering 4G subscriptions to vehicle owners, along with value-added services such as cloud solutions and mapping services. Additionally, Jio could monetize the data collected from the clusters and modules over time.
Jio Things, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms, has been working on developing Android-based operating systems for EVs, with a dedicated team focused on these projects in Bengaluru.
The operating system for the clusters offers real-time data analytics, customizable interfaces, voice recognition, and integrations with vehicle controllers, IoT-enabled charging infrastructure, and a preloaded battery management system. It also includes a suite of Jio Automotive Apps for services like voice assistance, music streaming, web browsing, and geolocation services.
According to CK Wang, general manager of MediaTek’s IoT business unit, the collaboration with Jio is promising for both companies as they aim to win in the future EV two-wheeler market in India.
MediaTek and Jio have a history of working together, with MediaTek supplying chips for Jio’s broadband routers and set-top boxes. Jio sees growth opportunities in the electric two-wheeler market in India, which is projected to have significant growth in the coming years.
Apart from two-wheelers, Jio is also exploring partnerships with automobile manufacturers in India to integrate its clusters and operating systems, signaling its ambitions in the automotive market.
Kiran Thomas, president and CEO of Jio Platforms, highlighted the commitment to innovation and enhancing customer experiences through the collaboration with MediaTek, setting new standards in IoT technology for the future of mobility.
Jio’s expansion into the automobile market includes offerings like vehicle tracking and diagnostics devices with eSIM support, as well as smart EV charging solutions for businesses and housing societies.
