Over 70% of Japanese mobile gamers and 90% of South Korean PC gamers are now engaging in games on multiple platforms.
These findings are from a comprehensive East Asia Games Market report by Niko Partners, which also reveals that more than half of the top 10% most played games in Japan and Korea are available on at least two distinct gaming platforms.
In Japan, this increase in multi-platform gaming is driven by a significant 30% year-on-year growth in mobile gamers also playing on consoles. Additionally, there has been a 5% year-over-year rise in PC gamers exploring other platforms due to the integration of mobile gaming.
PC and Console Gaming Driving Future Growth
The report from Niko Partners anticipates a plateau in Japan’s mobile game market over the next five years. However, there is forecasted growth in PC (5-year CAGR of 8.8%) and console gaming (5-year CAGR of 2.5%) owing to the popularity of multi-platform games and gamers’ increasing demand for them.
In South Korea, revenues from both PC and mobile games are expected to remain stable, while console gaming is projected to experience growth (5-year CAGR of 3.4%).
Multi-platform games emerge as a key driver for potential expansion in both markets, becoming a focal point for companies looking to release titles within these regions.
“We’ve observed a significant rise in gamers playing on multiple platforms in the past year. Some of this can be attributed to the availability of consoles in Japan post-scarcity during the pandemic,” noted Lisa Hanson, CEO of Niko Partners.
“Moreover, the development of more games for cross-platform use that enhance engagement on consoles, mobile, and PC has also contributed to this trend. It’s worth noting that gamers in East Asia are demonstrating that cross-platform games lead to heightened engagement.”
