Since the first developer version of iOS 18 was released at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, I’ve been using it on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The upcoming software update for iPhone, scheduled for release this fall, offers a range of exciting features. While I have a favorite feature, I’m also starting to appreciate many others.
Dark App Icons for the Win
iOS 18 introduces a long-awaited Dark Mode for app icons, adjusting the background of icons automatically as day transitions into night. This change is significant, especially for those who spend a lot of time staring at their screens. Additionally, the new eyedropper tool for changing app icon colors is an interesting addition, despite some reservations about its impact on icon uniqueness.
Another notable new feature is the ability to enlarge apps and widgets with a simple tap, providing more customization options for the home screen.
Dynamic wallpapers in iOS 18 offer changing colors throughout the day, adding a visually appealing touch to the user experience. While the available wallpapers in the beta may lack variety, this feature sets the stage for more exclusive options in the future.
The Passwords App
The new Passwords app in iOS 18 offers a well-designed solution for managing passwords, passkeys, and other authentication details. With features like AutoFill and flexible organization options, it simplifies the process of securely storing and sharing sensitive information.
While third-party password management solutions may face competition from Apple’s offering, the development of the Passwords app reflects a broader trend towards enhanced security and convenience in digital authentication.
The Big Unknown
While iOS 18 has several exciting features already, the most anticipated ones, such as Apple Intelligence, remain unreleased to the public. The gradual rollout of these features reflects Apple’s cautious approach to ensuring their success and integration with upcoming releases.
However, the timing and extent of Apple Intelligence features may also be influenced by Apple’s marketing strategy, particularly in the context of upcoming iPhone releases. Integration with the iPhone 16 series is crucial for Apple’s future plans, potentially delaying the full rollout of Apple Intelligence until the new phones are announced.
Should You Update Now?
As iOS 18 beta versions become more stable, I recommend regular users, especially those with iPhone 15 Pro, consider upgrading to at least the public beta. While the update currently offers significant improvements, the full potential of Apple Intelligence features is yet to be realized.
While iOS 18 may not usher in a revolutionary change immediately, the upcoming features, including those from Apple Intelligence, could enhance the overall user experience in the future.
