After a long and highly anticipated development process, Baldur’s Gate 3 was finally released on August 3rd, 2023 for PC, and September 6th, 2023 for PlayStation 5, quickly becoming a sensation in social circles and on streaming platforms. The game soared to the top of charts worldwide and captivated audiences with its exceptional performance. However, one platform was notably missing from the launch – Xbox.
Months have passed since Baldur’s Gate 3 first hit the market, and it continues to be a resounding success. But what about Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox? Let’s delve into that question.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 available on Xbox?
It’s widely known that the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox was delayed significantly. However, the reasons behind this delay are not well-documented. Larian Studios revealed that technical issues specifically on the Xbox Series S, the less powerful Xbox console currently available, hindered the development of Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox.
In order to avoid excluding a large player base, Larian Studios made the decision to postpone the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox until the game was ready for both Xbox consoles.
The long-awaited release finally took place on December 7th, 2023. This marked the official Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox release date, with both Series X and Series S consoles receiving the game at the end of the year. Following The Game Awards 2023, Larian Studios surprised gamers worldwide with the stealth-drop of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox.
However, this decision came with a compromise. The technical difficulties that had delayed the Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox release date led to the removal of split-screen co-op from the Series S version. This departure from Microsoft’s usual insistence on feature parity between consoles was a unique exception for the game.
