In 2023, the number of prominent esports titles in India doubled to 19, attracting 1.8 million players across 20 platforms. This number is projected to increase to 2.5 million in 2024. Additionally, viewership for game streamers has increased by 20-25%, especially in Tier-II cities.
The findings are from the EY-Loco gamer survey, which also indicates that the number of professional esports teams is expected to grow from 23 in 2023 to 35 in 2024. As major titles make a comeback, the number of prominent esports titles is forecasted to consolidate to 14 key games for 2024.
Moreover, 78% of surveyed individuals participate in esports events and watch at least one tournament monthly. Shooting games lead in-app purchase revenues at 24%, followed by strategy games at 14%.
Mobile Gaming, Tournaments, and Diversity
The growth of smartphone users in India continues to drive overall industry growth, with an expected reach of 640 million users by 2026. Wired broadband users are also projected to nearly double from 38 to 68 million.
Free Fire tournaments are anticipated to increase the esports prize pool to INR 220 million in 2024. Growth in airtime and viewership is expected, while the number of broadcast platforms may consolidate from 20 to 12.
Currently, around 65 brands are investing in India’s esports teams in 2024, up from 82 in 2023. The presence of the country’s international teams is expected to rise from 14 to 20, with a slight increase in the female fan base from 23% to 25%.
