As we approach the end of the year, all major manufacturers have launched their flagship smartphones, including Apple, which introduced its iPhone 16 line. While I’ve tested several Android phones this year, I’ve stuck to my tradition of getting a new iPhone annually—it suits me best due to the ecosystem.
This year, Apple has narrowed the gap between the base iPhone 16 and the higher-end iPhone 16 Pro models. I opted for the iPhone 16 Pro mainly because I require 1TB storage, surpassing the 512GB limit.
If not for the 1TB necessity, I might have chosen a non-Pro model for the first time in years.
The iPhone 16 Pro Design is Uninspiring
Apple has introduced vibrant colors, updated cameras, a powerful A18 chip, and features like the Camera Control and Action button in the iPhone 16 lineup. Interestingly, the Camera Control is available on all models, eliminating the need for the Pro version.
However, the iPhone 16 Pro, except for the Camera Control, closely resembles the iPhone 15 Pro. I chose the Pro for its 1TB storage, Camera Control, and the missed 5x telephoto lens from last year.
Without these factors, the lack of design changes makes the Pro models somewhat dull this year, especially compared to the impressive base iPhone 16.
The color options for the iPhone 16 Pro are bland compared to the base model. The lack of variety and uniqueness in colors like black, white, Natural Titanium, and Desert Titanium is disappointing. Apple could take a cue from Google and offer more exciting color choices for the Pro lineup.
The new colors like Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine for the base iPhone 16 are appealing. Apple should consider offering similar vibrant options for the Pro models to cater to a wider audience. The absence of exciting color choices for the Pro lineup is a missed opportunity.
Camera Control Evaluation
Camera Control is a notable addition to the iPhone 16 series, available on both base and Pro models. While it offers convenience, it may not be significantly better than using the touchscreen for photography. The positioning of the Camera Control can make landscape photos more challenging.
Even after adjusting sensitivity settings, the Camera Control may lead to more camera shake compared to using the touchscreen shutter. Fine-tuning settings feels quicker with on-screen controls than with the Camera Control. The placement of the Camera Control could have been improved for better usability.
Regrets about Choosing the iPhone 16 Pro
Many users have expressed satisfaction with the regular iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus over the Pro models. I, too, feel a pang of regret for not opting for the base model, especially for its attractive color options like pink, teal, and ultramarine.
The iPhone 16 almost matches the Pro features, making the decision even tougher. The Pro advantages, such as extra storage and camera enhancements, may not be significant for everyone. The continuous improvement of the base model and the iterative nature of the Pro models showcase Apple’s evolving lineup.
