There are days when I do not understand Hideo Kojima. I always recognize his contributions to the history of gaming and his success as a developer, but his style is not my cup of tea. However, there are moments when I play (or watch) something he’s created, and it clicks. I finally understand it. During this week’s State of Play event, I had a momentous “click” when I watched Troy Baker’s Higgs, dressed in full Crow regalia, electrocuting someone with a blistering guitar riff in the Death Stranding 2 trailer. If the game continues to look as intriguing as this, consider me on board.
Another major surprise at the State of Play event was Konami shadow-dropping a new, free-to-play Silent Hill game. It seems like the franchise is making a big comeback, with the company also revealing a new look at Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake. The rest of the event was fairly standard, but I’m especially looking forward to Stellar Blade, as it seems to be the kind of action game I gravitate towards.
The rest of the week has been filled with more staffing news. There have been more layoffs at Eidos Montreal, Sega of America, Nimble Giant, Airship Syndicate, Chief Rebel, and Artificer. Additionally, two leaders of major studios have stepped down: Douglas Morin of Devolver Digital and Joe and Pete Samuels of Supermassive Games. This barrage of sad stories is starting to take a toll on me. The cancellation of an unannounced Deus Ex game was a particularly hard blow, especially considering it was announced on my birthday.
On a personal note, I plan to try out Tekken 8 this weekend, and I might also dip into the new Suicide Squad title. The initial feedback on social media seems to suggest that it’s not as bad as expected. I also need to check out a few other smaller titles, including Another Code: Recollection and Home Safety Hotline.
