Last summer, the Honor Magic V2 surprised me with its incredibly slim and lightweight design, bringing foldable phones closer to traditional slab phones. At MWC 2024, Honor has raised the bar with the Porsche Edition of the device.
Priced at 2,699 euros, the Honor Magic V2 RSR boasts the same specifications as its predecessor but is even lighter at 234 grams. After using it for about three weeks, I’ve appreciated the experience of carrying a large screen in my pocket, although a few aspects have given me pause.
A new benchmark for foldable phone design
Weighing in at just 234 grams, the Magic V2 RSR is only 2 grams heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold weigh 253g and 283g, respectively. Its thin profile, measuring 9.9mm when folded, makes it more pocket-friendly than other foldables like the OnePlus Open, Samsung, and Google devices. The lightweight and slim design enhance the overall user experience, making it easy to carry around without feeling bulky.
The Magic V2 RSR’s Porsche-inspired design exudes elegance, with a titanium construction reminiscent of a Porsche 911. While the “sportscar feeling” might not resonate with everyone, the unique grip and stylish aesthetics add a touch of sophistication to the device.
Included accessories, such as a premium leather case and an Honor stylus, enhance the overall package. The stylus is compatible with both the cover display and the main screen, offering versatile functionality. Additionally, the presence of two fast chargers in the box underscores Honor’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and premium user experience.
Areas of improvement for this high-end phone
One aspect of the design that requires some adjustment is the placement of the volume buttons, which can be confusing when switching between folded and unfolded modes. Additionally, while the hardware is top-notch, the software experience lacks the premium touch expected from a device of this caliber.
Software limitations, including minimalistic wallpapers and icons, detract from the overall user experience. Honor’s slow software updates and unconventional interface gestures pose challenges for daily usability. Despite this, the multitasking capabilities of the device are commendable, offering a smooth and efficient workflow.
Is it worth the hefty price tag?
Featuring a 6.43-inch cover display and a 7.92-inch foldable screen with OLED panels supporting a 120Hz refresh rate, the Honor Magic V2 offers an immersive viewing experience. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, providing smooth performance for everyday tasks.
With a robust battery, efficient fast charging, and a reliable camera setup, the device caters to diverse user needs. However, the high price point of 2,699 euros makes it a niche offering in the market, suited for those seeking a premium and extravagant foldable phone experience.
