The Google Nest Mini offers an affordable entry point into the world of smart speakers. Priced at less than $50, it provides access to the Google voice assistant, allows you to control connected smart home devices, and delivers high-quality sound. If you’re thinking about upgrading to a more powerful smart speaker, it’s important to erase all your data from the Nest Mini to protect your personal information.
Google has made this process simple with its factory reset feature, which restores the speaker to its original settings and removes all stored data.
Interested in selling your Nest Mini? Here’s how you can factory reset the device, whether you have the older Google Home Mini 1st Gen or the newer Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen. The reset process only takes a few seconds.
How to reset Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen)
If you’re unsure about the generation of your Google Home Mini, check for a wall-mount screw slot on the device’s underside to identify it as a second-gen (Google Nest Mini). For the first-gen model, there won’t be a screw slot.
Step 1: Toggle the microphone on/off switch on the side of the device to the off position. The LED lights should pulse orange.
Step 2: Hold the device for about five seconds to initiate the factory reset process. Keep holding for another 10 seconds until you hear a chime, signaling the completion of the reset.
How to reset Google Home Mini (1st Gen)
For the first-gen Mini, locate the reset button below the power cord on the bottom of the speaker. Note that a factory reset cannot be done through the Google Home app. The button on the speaker is the only way to reset both generations of devices.
Step 1: Press and hold the reset button for approximately 15 seconds to factory reset the device.
Step 2: Upon completing the reset, you’ll hear a chime confirming the factory wipe.
Just need to reboot?
If you simply need to reboot your Home Mini without resetting it, perform a power cycle:
Step 1: Unplug the device for one minute, then plug it back in.
Step 2: Alternatively, use the Google Home app, navigate to Settings > Device Settings, and select Reboot from the More menu.
Selling or trading in your Google Home Mini
You can trade in your Google Home Mini at stores like Target and Walmart for around $4. While these options provide a quick and convenient transaction, selling directly to an individual may yield more profit. Websites like Swappa, eBay, and LetGo offer platforms for selling your device, with Swappa typically offering around $20 for a Home Mini.
Consider making your device a tax-deductible donation to receive some benefit during tax time. This allows you to give back while simplifying your taxes.
