While I’ve spent countless hours enjoying lossless audio from Apple Music on my iPhone, I recently discovered that I hadn’t listened to any lossless content on my Apple TV. A video by Audioholics’ Gene DellaSala highlighted that lossless audio is not enabled by default on the device.
Fortunately, enabling lossless audio on your Apple TV is a simple process that only requires a few clicks on your remote. Below are the steps to enable lossless audio on an Apple TV 4K:
Switch the Apple Music audio quality setting from High Quality to Lossless
Step 1: Open the Settings app from the Apple TV 4K’s home screen.
Step 2: Navigate to the Apps menu item.
Step 3: Select Music under the App Settings heading.
Step 4: Check the current setting for Audio Quality under the Audio heading. If it says “Lossless,” you’re already set. If it says “High Quality,” proceed to the next step.
Step 5: Choose Audio Quality from under the Audio heading.
Step 6: Select the Lossless option to switch to lossless audio quality.
Confirm the change by checking the Audio Quality field on the Music screen, which should now display “Lossless.”
It’s important to note that while the Apple TV 4K supports lossless audio quality up to 24-bit/48kHz from Apple Music, there are “hi-res lossless” tracks offered by Apple Music in 24-bit/96kHz or higher resolution. To listen to these tracks at the highest quality, you’ll need a hi-fi or headphone DAC compatible with iPhones or Android phones.
