Discover the hidden gem of Echo devices like the Echo Show 8 and Echo Dot – the Drop In feature. This feature allows you to transform your smart speaker or display into an intercom system, connecting you with friends and family across the globe. Stay in touch effortlessly with this convenient tool.
Download the app
Step 1: Start by downloading the latest version of the Alexa app on your Android or iOS device. You’ll need two Echo devices for Drop In to function properly. While you can initiate Drop Ins from the app, you can’t receive them via the app.
Step 2: Launch the app and set up Alexa Calling and Messaging. If prompted, fill out your contact information to get started.
Enable Drop In on devices
If the Drop In feature is disabled in the app, follow these steps to enable it:
Step 1: Tap on the Devices icon at the bottom of the Alexa app.
Step 2: Select the device you want to enable Drop In on in the devices menu.
Step 3: With Drop In activated on all your Echo devices, you can initiate drop-ins within your household by saying, “Alexa, drop in on [device name].” Additionally, you can enable drop-ins for contacts outside your home if desired.
Enable Drop In on your profile
To make Drop In calls via the Alexa app and have others do the same, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Click on the More button, then navigate to Communicate in the Alexa app. Look for the Drop-In feature icon to set it up on your profile.
Step 2: Ensure the Drop In section is enabled, and activate it if necessary.
Enable contact’s Drop In and ask them to do the same
Enable Drop In for your contacts by following these steps:
Step 1: In the Communicate section, select the person icon to access your contacts. Enable Drop In for those contacts with Echo devices or Alexa accounts under Permissions.
Step 2: Ensure your contacts also enable Drop In for you, allowing seamless communication both ways.
Begin calling
After setup, initiate a Drop In call by speaking the activation word followed by “drop in on [person’s name].” The person should receive the call on their device. When someone drops in on you, your Echo device will notify you, and communication will ensue.
