Microsoft Teams is a powerful workplace platform that promotes camaraderie among employees. With features like collaborative messaging, video conferencing, and file sharing tools, it caters to in-office, hybrid, and remote workers. However, managing a cluttered message stockpile in Microsoft Teams can be overwhelming. Luckily, deleting and hiding messages is a simple process, and this guide will walk you through it.
These methods apply to both the desktop app and the web version of Teams. By the end of this guide, you’ll be able to efficiently delete and hide messages in Teams.
Deleting Individual Chats in Microsoft Teams
While you can’t delete entire conversation threads at once, you can delete individual chats within a conversation.
Step 1: Right-click on a message in a chat or select the “More options” button represented by three dots near a chat to open the menu.
Step 2: Choose the “Delete” option.
Your message will be replaced with “This message has been deleted” along with an “Undo” button in case of accidental deletion.
Delete Entire Conversations in Microsoft Teams
Although you can’t delete all messages in a chat at once, you can hide conversations that you no longer need in the chat sidebar.
Step 1: Right-click on a conversation thread or select “More options” next to the chat icon in the sidebar.

You can also delete chats in Microsoft Teams using the mobile app version.
Step 1: Open the chat thread containing the messages you want to delete.
Step 2: Press and hold on a message to open the settings options, then choose the “Delete message” field and tap “Delete.”
Hiding Chats in Microsoft Teams
If your Teams feed is cluttered with old chats, you can hide them temporarily. Select the chat, click “More options” > “Hide.” The chat will be removed from your queue but will reappear when new messages are posted.
You can search for hidden chats using the “Search” field and unhide them by selecting the chat and clicking “More options” > “Unhide.”
Muting Chats in Microsoft Teams
If you want to stay in a chat but avoid notifications, you can mute the conversation. Select the chat, click “More options” > “Mute.” To unmute, follow the same steps and choose “Unmute.”
Edit or Delete a Sent Message in Microsoft Teams
If you need to edit or delete a sent message in Teams, hover over the message and click “Edit” to make changes. Click “Done” to save the update. To delete a message, hover over it, click “More options” > “Delete.”
