When taking a photo with an iPhone or iPad, the default format is Apple’s HEIC. Although more devices are supporting this format, you may still need to convert some images to a more compatible extension like JPEG.
Fortunately, there are simple ways to convert image formats on a Mac, and we’ll guide you through each method.
What is HEIC?
HEIC, or High-Efficiency Image Codec, is used by Apple to store photos and data on devices. It offers smaller file sizes compared to JPEG, making it the default format introduced with iOS 11.
You may also hear about HEIF, which is High-Efficiency Image Format and is also used by Apple. HEIC is what stores HEIF photos and data, so the terms are often used interchangeably.
How to Convert HEIC to JPEG on Mac using Preview
Preview is the default app on Mac for viewing images. Follow these steps to convert an HEIC photo to JPEG:
Step 1: Open the HEIC image in Preview by double-clicking or right-clicking and selecting “Open With” Preview.
Step 2: Go to File > Export in Preview.
Step 3: Rename the file, choose a location, and select JPEG under Format.
Step 4: Adjust the quality using the slider and click Save.
How to Convert HEIC to JPEG on Mac using Photos
If you use iCloud to sync photos, you can convert an HEIC image to JPEG using the Photos app:
Step 1: Open the image in Photos.
Step 2: Select File > Export and choose Export 1 Photo.
Step 3: Select JPEG under Photo Kind.
Step 4: Customize settings and click Export.
Step 5: Choose a location to save the converted image and click Export.
Other Methods to Convert HEIC to JPEG
In MacOS, you can convert multiple HEIC images to JPEG at once. Simply select the images, right-click, go to Quick Actions, and choose Convert Image with JPEG format.
Both Preview and Photos apps support exporting images in various formats including JPEG, PNG, and TIFF.
Converting HEIC to JPEG allows you to use the images on devices that don’t support HEIC. Check out more tips on sharing photos between iPhone and Android devices.
