Regardless of your PC’s age, playing the latest games is not out of the question. Modders have developed a mod that allows the use of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 or AMD’s FSR 3 on much older graphics cards, providing a significant gaming performance boost of up to 75%.
DLSS is Nvidia’s frame generation technology initially reserved for RTX 40-series graphics cards, while FSR 3 is AMD’s open-source alternative. Although FSR 3 is available on many more graphics cards, the adoption has been slow, limiting its availability to only four games. However, a mod recently discovered by Digital Foundry allows all games that support DLSS 3 natively to utilize the FSR 3 technology on older RTX GPUs, up to 20-series and 30-series, effectively enhancing gaming performance.
The mod involves injecting DLL files into a game’s directory, editing the registry, and enabling the feature in the game to make FSR 3 disguised as DLSS 3 work. Despite some downsides such as visual artifacts and higher latency, the performance boost shown in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales is noteworthy.
Additionally, an interesting GitHub project called ReBarUEFI offers a BIOS mod, allowing older PCs to run Resizable BAR (ReBAR) for a performance boost of up to 12%. While enabling the DLSS 3 mod is relatively straightforward, ReBarUEFI is more complex and requires careful reading of instructions.
It’s impressive to see how people are finding ways to bring newer technology to older PCs, even if it requires some tinkering to get it to work.
