X, formerly known as Twitter, has recently introduced a new feature that allows the company to use users’ posts to train its Grok AI. This setting is turned on by default, but users have the option to disable it and delete their conversation history with the AI.
According to X’s settings page, enabling this feature allows X to utilize user posts, interactions, inputs, and results with Grok for training purposes. The platform also mentions that this data may be shared with their service provider xAI for the same purpose.
While disabling this setting is not possible through the X mobile app, users can do so on the desktop version of the platform. Here’s how:
How to switch off X’s data sharing settings:
- Open the Settings page on X on your desktop.
- Navigate to the “Privacy and safety” section.
- Select the “Grok” option.
- Uncheck the box to disable the setting.
After turning off the setting, users can delete their conversation history with the AI by clicking on the “Delete conversation history” button.
Recently, X’s owner Elon Musk announced that xAI has begun training its Grok large language model using advanced AI technology. Musk aims for this AI model to become the most powerful in the world by December 2024. The use of users’ past tweets and posts for training the AI showcases X’s commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities.
X is not alone in utilizing user data to train AI, as Meta (formerly Facebook) also faced scrutiny over using public content from Facebook and Instagram to train its AI. Due to regulatory pressure, Meta decided to pause its plans for utilizing user data for AI training.
