One of the standout features is a new adhesive design that can be loosened by applying low voltage from a 9-volt battery. Glue has presented a significant challenge for DIY repairers, especially as devices have become increasingly thinner. Manufacturers like Apple have been relying more on glue over screws, making repair tasks more difficult.
Previously, Apple’s Self-Service Repair kit was bulky, including a machine to melt down glue for a battery replacement. The new ionized adhesive feature is available on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models, but not on the Pro models.
The Pro models, however, feature a rearchitected interior that enhances access to components, with the LiDAR Scanner now serviceable. Additionally, the iOS 18 update introduces Repair Assistant, aimed at aiding both professional repair technicians and consumers in calibrating different modules to maintain optimal performance, aligning with Apple’s “parts pairing” policy.
Another significant improvement is the repairability of the TrueDepth Camera on iPhone 16 models, eliminating the need for it to be connected to a Mac during repairs.
