Helldivers 2 has undergone several updates since its launch in February, with the upcoming Escalation of Freedom update set to be the largest one yet. Scheduled for release on August 6, the update aims to introduce more challenges for players.
One of the key changes is the addition of a new level of difficulty, allowing players to progress from level 9 to 10, the toughest in the game. This higher difficulty setting will bring increased enemy numbers and tougher enemy types, along with new rewards such as Super Samples.
For those not seeking extreme difficulty, there are new enemies to contend with. The Impaler, a Terminid enemy from the original Helldivers, emerges from underground to block movement or attack players with tentacles. The Spore Charger charges from a shroud of fog, while the Terminid Alpha Commander presents a larger, more fearsome challenge.
New enemies like Rocket Tanks have been introduced to the Automatons faction, capable of launching rockets into the air. Additionally, Arrowhead Game Studios has teased more enemies yet to be revealed.
Alongside new enemies, players will encounter a mysterious swamp biome with rain that reduces armor for helldivers and enemies. A new objective involves escorting a crying larva in a backpack that attracts more enemies.
In a player-friendly change, a new system has been implemented to address grief kicking. Instead of being kicked back to the ship, players now spawn in a new session with all team loot intact while the kicking team retains their items.
Helldivers 2 continues to evolve based on community feedback, with ongoing story updates introducing new missions. The game’s popularity soared with recent missions like the one where players had to choose between liberating a planet or saving a children’s hospital. Although player numbers have dipped since its release, particularly on Steam, it remains one of the standout titles of the year.
