Heather Cerlan, a senior artist with experience on a variety of triple-A games, is leading a team of nine former Bethesda Game Studios developers in the creation of a new game.
The team is currently working on a multiplayer/co-op RPG simulation game under a new studio, the name of which has not been revealed yet. Operating remotely from Maryland, the team is currently seeking funding, as Cerlan mentioned in an interview during the recent Dice Summit.
Cerlan expressed her determination to move forward with the project despite the challenges, citing the uniqueness of the game in the market as one of its key selling points. With original intellectual property being rare, indie game developers are the primary creators of such games, supported by game venture capitalists.
“We’re drawing inspiration from various genres. I’ll refrain from sharing specific details until we’re ready to announce,” Cerlan stated.

The core team of five originates from Bethesda Game Studios. Cerlan, a senior environment artist, previously contributed to Starfield at Bethesda, along with other notable titles like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Dragon Age 2.
“Expect highly systemic gameplay in a sandbox environment,” she added.
This game will lay the groundwork for larger future projects. Given the current challenges in the industry, a step-by-step approach might prove more successful than overly ambitious plans. Fundraising discussions are ongoing.
“By involving the community, we can gradually build the project. Many developers in triple-A are seeking a change from large teams. This moment presents an opportunity to create smaller, tightly-knit teams for more intimate projects,” Cerlan explained.
She aims to create a team passionate and focused rather than bloated with members.
“The game will offer a range of emotional experiences, primarily conveyed through environmental storytelling and NPC interactions, setting the tone for the gameplay,” Cerlan noted.
