Google has announced its plans to introduce on-device AI-powered features like recording summaries and smart replies on the upcoming Pixel 8. These features will be powered by Gemini Nano, a compact model released by Google last year, designed to operate on devices.
The company has revealed that Summerizer in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard will be available as a developer preview in the next Pixel feature drop. These features were initially announced during the Pixel 8 launch last October. Previously, Gemini Nano-powered features were only accessible on the Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24.
Google mentioned, “Running large language models on phones with different memory specifications can result in varied user experiences, so we have been conducting tests and validations on the Pixel 8. We are excited to offer more enthusiasts and developers the chance to experiment with Gemini Nano, aiming to gather feedback and encourage innovation.”
Traditionally, Google has focused on AI-powered features that rely on the cloud, even when they are tailored for mobile devices.
In January, Google introduced “Circle to Search” for specific Pixel and Samsung devices. The company has recently announced that more Pixel and Samsung phones, along with selected tablets, will receive the Circle to Search feature. Moreover, the feature will be updated to support instant translation of on-screen content.
