Google Maps has finally introduced speedometer and speed limits on iOS and CarPlay after more than five years since their debut on Android. This new feature is designed to help iPhone users avoid speeding tickets while driving.
According to TechCrunch, Google has started rolling out speedometers and speed limits for iPhone users globally. When users start navigation on Google Maps, they will now see their vehicle’s speed displayed in either miles or kilometers, depending on their region.
Last week, TechCrunch first noticed Google Maps showcasing these new speeding features in India. Google later confirmed that the rollout will be worldwide.
To activate the speedometer and speed limits on your iPhone, simply tap on your profile picture in the Google Maps app, go to Settings > Navigation > Driving options, and enable the feature. The speed indicator will change colors to alert you when you exceed the speed limit set in your region.
Google explicitly states on a support page that the speedometer is for informational use only. Users should rely on their vehicle’s speedometer to determine their actual driving speed.
The speedometer and speed limits feature was first launched on Android in 2019 and later expanded to over 40 countries in May of the same year. It was initially only available in select markets before the global rollout.
