Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut’s launch on PC has propelled the title to the top of the May 2024 bestseller charts, as reported by industry-tracking firm Circana. In a month with few triple-A game releases, the unexpected 2020 title resurgence took the lead. Notably, hardware sales continued to decline, resulting in a 6% year-over-year decrease in monthly spending total.
Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports, stated, “Projected U.S. total spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories fell 6% in May 2024 compared to a year ago, reaching $4.0 billion. Year-to-date 2024 spending is up 2% from the previous year, totaling $22.8 billion.”
May 2024 Dollar Sales, Millions | May 2023 |
May 2024 |
Change |
Total Video Game Sales | $4,233 | $3,975 | -6% |
Video Game Content | $3,733 | $3,624 | -3% |
Video Game Hardware | $339 | $202 | -40% |
Video Game Accessories | $161 | $148 | -8% |
According to the report, video game hardware saw a significant decline of 40% in May and 30% year-to-date. Piscatella noted, “May video game hardware spending declined 40% compared to a year ago, to $202 million, and is now 30% lower year-to-date. All current generation hardware platforms experienced double-digit percentage declines in 2024, with Switch showing the most significant drop.” Piscatella attributed this decline to May 2024 not matching the strong launch of Tears of the Kingdom in the previous year.
For the first time in 2024, all monthly sales figures were negative. While hardware sales have been decreasing, video game content and accessories usually offset this decline. Nevertheless, the year-to-date comparison shows a 2% growth over May 2023. Games and accessories also exhibited positive growth on the same chart.
