Even with the release of Honkai: Star Trail, Genshin Impact remains an unstoppable force in miHoYo’s world. The multi-platform action RPG, which debuted in 2020, has now generated over $5 billion in revenue from players worldwide, according to data.ai.
The iOS version of Genshin Impact alone has amassed nearly $1.5 billion in revenue in China, with additional earnings from untrackable third-party Android app outlets. China accounts for approximately 30% of the game’s total revenue, followed by Japan with close to $1.06 billion (21% of the total) and the United States with a contribution of $903 million (18% of the total). These top three markets together make up 70% of the game’s total earnings.
Notably, Genshin Impact has achieved this $5 billion milestone faster than any other game, as depicted in the graph below. It reached this mark in less than 40 months, outpacing the second fastest game, Clash of Clans, by nine months. The game also achieved this milestone on the same day as another game on the list, Gardenscapes, but in significantly fewer months.
Further analysis of the statistics shows only 13 games have achieved this $5 billion milestone to date.
According to data.ai’s Game IQ taxonomy, Genshin Impact’s success can be attributed to its innovation as an Open World RPG, captivating gameplay, and appeal to a wide audience, especially in Western markets. The game’s regular release of new content, such as characters, quests, and events, has attracted and retained a large player base.
It’s projected that Genshin Impact will surpass $6 billion in earnings before the year’s end. Despite the varying release dates, genres, and styles showcased in the latest milestone data, game developers can look to Genshin Impact as a model of self-sustaining success.
