Journalists working in the gaming industry are experiencing increased workloads and expectations, along with concerns about the impact of AI, according to a survey conducted by PR company Big Games Machine (BGM). The survey covers various topics including job satisfaction, common challenges, and overall outlook, reflecting the uncertainty faced by journalists in the gaming space.
Over 150 participants were surveyed, with a majority expressing some level of negativity towards the future of games journalism. Key challenges identified include time constraints for story coverage, an emphasis on SEO content, and inadequate compensation. BGM co-founder, James Kaye, remarked on the growing competitiveness of the industry and the evolving media landscape, highlighting the pressure on journalists to maintain interest in gaming content.
The threat of AI; decline of blockchain coverage
BGM’s survey also revealed a reluctance among journalists to cover blockchain-related news, with an increasing number indicating little to no interest in such topics. Similarly, a majority expressed doubts about covering metaverse activations on platforms like Roblox and Fortnite in the near future.
While concerns about the impact of AI on games journalism were prevalent among respondents, there were also nuanced perspectives. Some journalists see AI as a potential tool for improving efficiency, while others worry about its influence on content creation and search engine algorithms. Despite these challenges, the overall sentiment regarding job security and prospects in the industry for the next year leaned towards neutrality or slight positivity.
One journalist quoted in the survey predicts a shift towards subscription-based, creator-owned outlets in response to industry changes, suggesting that games journalism will evolve to adapt to new challenges. The survey reflects a mix of concerns and optimism about the future of gaming journalism, showcasing the dynamic nature of the industry.
