Keith Rabois’ departure from Founders Fund to return to Khosla Ventures in January sent ripples across the venture capital ecosystem. His move was particularly surprising because VC investors, especially at the partner or general partner level like Rabois, typically stay put due to the unique nature of VC funds.
VC funds have 10-year life cycles and partners have strong incentives to stay the course, considering that they may be a key figure in the fund and have personal investments at stake. However, despite this tradition, recent months have seen a slew of significant moves in the industry with investors rejoining old firms, venturing out on their own, or taking a break from investing altogether.
The following are some notable moves that have taken place so far:
July
- Anne Lee Skates announced her departure from Andreessen Horowitz on July 11 to pursue her “life’s work” after backing companies like Alloy and Cider.
June
- Spencer Peterson left Bedrock to join Coatue as a general partner, while Amanda “Robby” Robson departed Cowboy Ventures to start her own fund.
May
- Alison Stillman stepped back from Serena Ventures, while Terri Burns launched Type Capital, focusing on early-stage startups.
- Eva Ho transitioned out of Fika Ventures, and Alison Lange Engel became the CEO at Ceros.
- Vic Singh announced his departure from Eniac Ventures after 15 years to start his own firm.
April
- Ethan Kurzweil left Bessemer Venture Partners to launch an early-stage-focused investment firm with Kristina Shen and Mark Goldberg.
- Christina Farr exited OMERS Ventures to focus on writing and consulting in the health tech space.
March
- Ethan Choi left Accel to join Khosla Ventures, while Social Capital fired partners Jay Zaveri and Ravi Tanuku.
- Miles Grimshaw returned to Thrive Capital, and Sam Blond moved back to an operating role after leaving Founders Fund.
January
- Connie Chan departed Andreessen Horowitz after 12 years to explore new opportunities.
