This year’s IEM Cologne is coming to a close, and we had the opportunity to chat with the talented Freya Spiers during the NAVI vs. MOUZ semi-final matchup. Our conversation delved into a year filled with Counter-Strike events, strategies for avoiding burnout, and Freya’s journey as one of the most prominent talents in the CS scene.
Sophie: Thank you for taking the time for this interview.
How are you enjoying your time in Cologne?
Freya: Cologne has always been amazing for me. It’s like a yearly pilgrimage that I look forward to. I’ve been attending events here since 2014, starting as a fan at Colness for Games Farm. The unique identity of each IEM event, from Chengdu to Katowice, has been a fantastic experience for me.
Sophie: Absolutely, the diversity and passion seen at these events are truly special. Speaking of your experience across various IEM events, how does Cologne compare to the others?
Freya: Each IEM event offers a unique perspective and fervor from the fans. While Chengdu showcased unparalleled fandom and enthusiasm, events like Katowice and Dallas have their own charm. The transition to Counter-Strike 2 has brought about changes like MR12 format, making the gameplay quicker and more intense.
Despite these changes, the essence of Counter-Strike remains strong, drawing fans from across the globe. It’s heartening to witness the dedication and passion from both players and fans in this evolving landscape.
Sophie: With the packed schedule of Counter-Strike events like BLAST and the Esports World Cup, how do you manage to avoid burnout as talent during this busy period?
Freya: The evolving landscape of Counter-Strike 2 promises exciting opportunities for talent. While the prospect of burnout is always looming, it’s essential to remember our worth and value in the industry. Taking breaks and finding a balance between work and personal life is crucial in sustaining longevity in this field.
My transition from a reporter to a desk host was a gradual process supported by my colleagues and producers. This journey has been fulfilling and rewarding, allowing me to explore different facets of esports broadcasting. While I appreciate the thrill of live hosting, interviewing players also offers a unique connection and insight into their world.
Sophie: It’s inspiring to hear about your journey and the intricacies of talent progression in esports. As we witness the evolution of Counter-Strike 2, how do you perceive the events now compared to the CS:GO era?
Freya: The shift to Counter-Strike 2 has introduced new dynamics in gameplay and event structures. The transition has been smooth, with familiar faces continuing to shine in this new chapter. The balance between tradition and innovation is key in maintaining the legacy of CS:GO while embracing the future of CS2.
As we look ahead to the grand final, my prediction leans towards NAVI facing off against Vitality. Each team brings its unique strengths, and it’ll be a thrilling match to watch. Personally, I’m rooting for Vitality, hoping to see them secure a victory after their impressive performances.
Sophie: It’s always exciting to see how the competition unfolds. Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences with us today.
