Fortnite is now available on mobile devices through the Epic Games Store app on Android and iOS in the EU.
The app includes popular mobile games such as Fall Guys, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fortnite, with more titles expected to be added in the future. It is also accessible through third-party mobile stores like AltStore PAL, with plans to expand to more platforms.
While the process is straightforward for Android users, iOS users in the EU face a bit more complexity. They need to visit the official website or click on the epic.download link to initiate the installation. Additional permissions may need to be granted in the device settings for iOS users to complete the process. Epic has also provided a tutorial video for guidance.
Epic Games commented on the challenges faced in bringing the store to mobile devices and expressed its ongoing efforts to challenge the app store policies of Apple and Google.
The absence of Fortnite from mobile devices was due to a policy violation where Epic allowed direct in-game purchases, leading to removal from app stores. Legal battles ensued, resulting in court rulings that favored external purchase buttons on apps and criticized the monopoly practices of Apple and Google.
In a statement, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney acknowledged the progress made in opening up competition in the mobile ecosystem and emphasized the importance of choice for developers and consumers.
“The tide is turning and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition. We are grateful to the European Commission for making it possible to launch the Epic Games Store and offer our games to iOS users in the European Union. Now European iOS users and all Android users can access our store and games, as they’ve always been able to do on open platforms like PC and Mac. The fight is far from over, but this is tangible progress for developers and consumers who can begin to benefit from competition and choice.”
In an interview with GameFile, Sweeney revealed the financial impact of the legal battles, citing a loss of approximately $1 billion in revenue for the company.
