Fortnite is making a comeback on iOS, but only for European players, four years after leaving the platform.
Apple announced changes to iOS in the EU in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), allowing apps to be “sideloaded” from sources outside of the App Store. This represents a significant shift for Apple, which has previously resisted sideloading due to security concerns.
As a result, Epic Games plans to bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe, as well as launching the Epic Games Store on the platform.
Epic Games, while getting ready to relaunch on iOS, has expressed dissatisfaction with Apple’s implementation of DMA compliance. Despite this, Epic is preparing to bring Fortnite and the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe.
Epic’s approach to revenue share and in-app purchases is less aggressive than Apple’s policies, as seen through the Epic Games Store’s 13 percent revenue share for developers.
Fortnite has evolved into a digital games portal with thousands of user-generated games, signaling a lucrative future for Epic as a software marketplace. The game now offers a variety of gaming modes beyond its classic battle royale, including new titles developed by Epic itself.
