In August, Madden NFL 25 emerged as the best-selling game, continuing EA’s football title streak from July. However, the month saw a decline in video game hardware sales, as reported by industry tracker Circana.
August 2024 Dollar Sales, Millions | Aug 2023 | Aug 2024 | Change |
Total Video Game Sales | $4,435 | $4,120 | -7% |
Video Game Content | $3,933 | $3,739 | -5% |
Video Game Hardware | $324 | $208 | -36% |
Video Game Accessories | $178 | $173 | -3% |
According to Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games, hardware sales plummeted by 36% year-over-year in August. All current generation console platforms observed a decline, with Switch experiencing the sharpest decrease at 41%.
Piscatella highlighted a downturn in accessory spending, attributing it to a 10% decrease in Gamepad sales. Despite a 1% YoY increase in overall spending for the year, hardware sales continue to decline by 28% year-over-year. The industry anticipates potential rejuvenation with the introduction of the PlayStation 5 Pro.
