Flappy Bird, the beloved side-scrolling game, is set to make a return more than a decade later. However, Doug Nguyen, the creator of the original game, has distanced himself from the project.
In a Twitter post, Nguyen clarified that he did not sell Flappy Bird to the Flappy Bird Foundation and emphasized that he does not support cryptocurrency.
Keeping Current
Given the significant changes in the gaming industry over the past ten years, the revival of Flappy Bird will feature new elements. These include additional worlds, modes such as basketball challenges, and new characters like Tekno the robotic bird and Peng the penguin.
The new version of Flappy Bird will introduce an “EZ Mode” for beginners and an online multiplayer mode where up to 100 players can compete. The web version is scheduled for launch in October, followed by iOS and Android releases in 2025.
Although marketed as “The official Flappy Bird,” this revival is being led by “super fans” at The Flappy Bird Foundation without Nguyen’s involvement.
One of the key figures behind this project is chief creative Michael Roberts, who also has ties to web3 firm 1208 Productions, explaining Nguyen’s anti-crypto stance.
The new Flappy Bird website claims, “It’s really me!” and describes the return as a “decade-long mission” involving the acquisition of legal rights and collaboration with the original creator. However, Nguyen has publicly stated that he has no association with this game.
Nguyen removed the original Flappy Bird from app stores shortly after its Android release in 2014 due to concerns about its addictive nature. Despite generating an estimated daily ad revenue of $50,000, he felt it was becoming more of a harmful addiction than a form of entertainment, prompting him to take it down.
By distancing himself from the re-release, Nguyen continues to uphold this stance.
