During Nintendo’s February Direct Partner Showcase, a surprising announcement was the return of Epic Mickey. This Nintendo Wii adventure has a cult following among Disney fans for its unique painting mechanic and clever 2D levels that pay homage to classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. While it was beloved by some, initial reviews were mixed due to awkward Wii-era motion controls and a subpar 3D camera.
Fortunately, the Disney adventure is receiving redemption in Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. This upcoming release not only brings the Wii game to the Switch but also aims to address most of its prominent issues. The transformation was expected given the need for control adjustments to align with the Switch’s more conventional button layout. Surprisingly, Rebrushed is more than just a typical HD remaster, showcasing substantial remake efforts, despite slightly modest visual upgrades.
My demo featured a segment of Gremlin Village, the second major area in Epic Mickey. I quickly reacquainted myself with the paint and thinner mechanics, a clever 3D platforming gimmick from the Wii era that has maintained its charm. The demo primarily showcased the overhauled visuals and controls of Rebrushed. Although it may appear brighter and smoother than its Wii predecessor, there are some rough edges that remind players of its older origins, despite being rebuilt from scratch. The revamped assets stay true to the original design, creating a familiar yet fresh experience.
The standout improvement is the control overhaul, providing a completely new gameplay feel. Using a standard Switch Pro Controller instead of motion controls for painting enhances the gameplay experience, seamlessly integrating modern 3D gaming controls. This enhancement eliminates major distractions, allowing players to appreciate the game’s unique gameplay elements and Disney references.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed has the potential to introduce a new generation to the series and possibly pave the way for future installments. By modernizing the controls and enhancing the visuals, the game aims to attract both old fans and newcomers alike. With a reimagined 2D level inspired by Mickey’s Steamboat Willie cartoon, the game continues to pay tribute to Disney’s rich history.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is set to launch this year on various platforms including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
