Embracer Group intends to sell Saber Interactive, one of its major subsidiaries, to a consortium of private investors in a deal valued at up to $500 million. This sale would transition Saber into a privately-owned and independent entity with approximately 3,500 employees, according to Bloomberg’s original report.
Currently, Saber is in the process of remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a classic roleplaying game originally released by BioWare in 2003. Embracer’s subsidiary, Aspyr Media, was initially working on the remake in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, the project was transferred to Saber in 2022 after facing delays.
As a result of significant mergers and acquisitions, Embracer Group is undergoing a comprehensive reorganization and cost-cutting strategy. The Swedish conglomerate is streamlining its portfolio by consolidating holdings and closing down some of its studios.
Saber, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, operates studios worldwide and is known for popular titles such as World War Z and Snowrunner. The studio has several game releases planned for this year, including Space Marine 2 and Jurassic Park Survival.

Embracer acquired Saber in 2020 for $525 million and subsequently merged other newly acquired studios like Demiurge Studios and New World Interactive into Saber.
With Embracer Group actively seeking to reduce costs, this transaction allows the company to alleviate some debt from its balance sheet. The specifics about which subsidiaries of Saber and Embracer are included in the deal remain unclear, with indications from Bloomberg suggesting that other Embracer subsidiaries could potentially be part of the arrangement.
