DuckDuckGo’s privacy-focused browser has introduced a new “Sync & Backup” feature that lets users privately sync and access bookmarks, favorites, and passwords across multiple devices. Now, users can privately sync bookmarks and passwords between DuckDuckGo browsers on multiple devices without the need to create an account or sign in, and the company assures users that DuckDuckGo never sees their bookmarks or passwords, staying consistent with its privacy-first claims.
The feature works across most Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone devices, allowing users to share information like bookmarks and passwords from their DuckDuckGo browser on their Mac to their iPhone and vice versa. Thus, users who prioritize privacy and data security can use the same browser on multiple devices and have their information synced without the need for a third-party password manager.
To utilize the new Sync & Backup feature, users can head to the browser’s Settings, select the “Sync & Backup” option, and click “Sync With Another Device,” then follow the instructions under “Begin Syncing.” For phone or tablet users, devices can be linked with a QR code, while desktop users have to enter an alphanumeric code. Additionally, users can choose the “Sync and Back Up This Device” from the “Single-Device Setup” section if working with only one device. Once the setup is complete, users can view a full list of all synced devices and edit device nicknames as needed.
After the setup, users are advised to save their Recovery PDF, which contains a unique Recovery Code that will enable access to synced data if devices are lost or damaged. DuckDuckGo emphasizes the importance of the Recovery Code as the only way to access data from a new phone or computer.
