The United Arab Emirates government has set its sights on transforming Dubai into a global gaming hub, aiming to establish the city as one of the top 10 destinations for games companies by 2033.
During the Dubai GameExpo Summit powered by Pocket Gamer Connects, CEO of Dubai Economic Development Corporation Hadi Badri and Dubai Chambers digital operations director Abdulla AlGaoud discussed the government’s initiatives and aspirations for the games sector.
Badri highlighted the significant investment in infrastructure in Dubai, with the ambition for the city to become a “global crossroads” for knowledge sharing and networking, particularly within the games industry. He emphasized that the government would provide unwavering support for the sector.
Driving Investment
AlGaoud mentioned that the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033 signifies the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the games sector. This program focuses on talent, content, and technology, aligning with broader national strategies to enhance the UAE and Dubai’s digital economy. Through investments, business support, and educational initiatives, the program aims to create a thriving ecosystem for the industry.
As part of this vision, Dubai aims to position itself among the top 10 cities in the global games industry, with plans to generate 30,000 jobs and establish a $1 billion industry by 2023, according to AlGaoud.
Global Competition
While Dubai seeks to grow its gaming sector, it faces competition from other countries in the MENA region, including Saudi Arabia, which has unveiled plans to invest heavily in games development. Established gaming hubs like the UK, US, Finland, Canada, and China, along with emerging players like Turkey, are also vying for talent.
Nevertheless, Dubai is ready to compete on the global stage, backed by significant investments and government support to realize its ambitions and secure its position as a key player in the digital future of the city.
