In a podcast released on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, Trump shared details of his conversation with Cook, where the Apple CEO expressed concerns about EU fines and regulatory actions.
According to BBC reports, Apple was recently ordered to pay Ireland €13 billion ($14bn) in unpaid taxes by the European Court of Justice after an eight-year court battle.
Trump mentioned an additional $2 billion fine on Apple, bringing the total to $17-18 billion, following a legal battle over unpaid taxes in September.
Characterizing the European Commission’s actions as “political”, Cook expressed concerns about the impact of opening Apple’s services, like the App Store, to third parties as required by the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Despite Apple’s concerns, the EU has warned the tech giant to open up its iOS ecosystem to other devices to comply with the Digital Markets Act, or face penalties.
