Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Alien: Romulus (2024).
After numerous divisive sequels, Alien fans were eager for a rejuvenation of the franchise. Alien: Romulus seemed poised to deliver just that. Directed by Fede Álvarez, known for Don’t Breathe, the film promised a return to the series’ roots while also introducing new elements.
Romulus Delivers What Fans Want
Alien: Romulus succeeds in capturing the essence of the original Alien film, focusing on practical effects and intense body horror. The performances by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson as Rain and Andy are standout, bringing depth to the characters in a simple but effective story. The film’s set pieces and creatures feel real and terrifying, adding to the tension.
Despite its strengths, Alien: Romulus falters in its attempts at fan service. References to previous Alien films, including a CGI recreation of Ian Holm, detract from the film’s impact. While the practical effects are commendable, the digital recreation stands out as artificial and unnecessary.
A Flawed but Worthy Sequel
Alien: Romulus is a flawed yet engaging sequel that struggles with balancing homage to the franchise and telling its own story. While it excels in its final moments, the film’s reliance on callbacks hinders its overall impact. Despite its shortcomings, Alien: Romulus offers a thrilling and well-directed experience.
Alien: Romulus is currently showing in theaters.
