Discord recently announced the layoff of 17% of its staff, approximately 170 employees, as part of an effort to improve efficiency. The decision came after CEO Jason Citron conveyed in a memo that the company had grown rapidly and expanded its workforce, but in the process, had taken on more projects and become less efficient. The layoffs are aimed at bringing more agility to the organization.
Citron noted that the move to reduce the workforce was driven by the need to sharpen the company’s focus and improve the way they work together. Discord is providing five months of salary to laid-off employees, along with an additional week for every year at Discord, and five months of benefits, including access to healthcare through the end of the year.
Similar to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy’s recent claims about layoffs, Citron emphasized that the decision is in line with Discord’s efforts to make the company more sustainable. Last year, Discord launched several monetization features, including a marketplace and new subscription options.
