Welcome to the era of playable documentaries.
Retro gaming studio Digital Eclipse and The Tetris Company are unveiling the latest trailer and other details for the upcoming interactive documentary game Tetris Forever, the newest addition to the studio’s Gold Master Series.
Tetris Forever immerses players in a playable documentary that pays homage to the original, genre-defining puzzle game. It narrates the fascinating evolution of Tetris, from a modest, single-programmer project in the Soviet Union to an internationally beloved gaming franchise with enduring popularity. The documentary features 14 classic Tetris games, some of which are making their debut outside Japan for the first time.
Players can delve into four decades of Tetris history across 14 games. They can revisit the origins from 1984 with a faithful recreation of the first Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer, compete in the multiplayer favorite Tetris Battle Gaiden, trigger massive explosions to clear lines in Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, and enjoy several other timeless games.
The lineup of single- and multiplayer games in Tetris Forever includes versions from the Apple II, NES, Game Boy, and Nintendo’s Japanese-market consoles, the Famicom and Super Famicom.
Some of the featured games are:
- Tetris, released by Spectrum Holobyte in 1988 on the Apple II
- Tetris, released by Bullet-Proof Software in 1988 on the Famicom
- Hatris, released by Bullet-Proof Software in 1990 on the Famicom
- Tetris 2 + Bombliss, released by Bullet-Proof Software in 1990 on the Famicom
- …and more iconic titles
Digital Eclipse’s collection also includes an authentic recreation of the original Tetris version created by Alexey Pajitnov on the Soviet “Electronika 60” computer system in 1984, offering players a glimpse of Tetris as envisioned by its creator.
Players can venture into a virtual museum filled with archival materials, such as video featurettes, photos, original ads, and restored playable games in high-definition, presented in chronological order.
Featuring over 90 minutes of new documentary content by Area 5, players can uncover the true history of Tetris in its purest form.
Tetris Time Warp, a fresh Tetris variant by Digital Eclipse, allows up to four players to warp through different Tetris eras in real-time, experiencing a mix of graphic styles and play mechanics.
Tetris Forever will debut on PC via Steam and GOG, with releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4|5, and Xbox One and Series X|S scheduled for later in 2024.
