Google is now rolling out the April update to ChromeOS users, introducing new features like custom keyboard shortcuts and mouse button actions customization. The update also enhances offline text-to-speech voice support. Users can expect the ChromeOS M123 update to roll out over the next few days.
Let’s delve into these exciting features. The standout feature is the ability to assign custom keyboard shortcuts to various actions. This feature, commonly found in other desktop systems, can now be enabled by users by turning on the setting flag called “#enable-shortcut-customization”. The company mentioned that the keyboard customization shortcut will be turned on by default with the upcoming ChromeOS update, M124.
Additionally, Google is now allowing users to customize mouse button actions. Users with mice featuring more than two buttons can assign these extra buttons for tasks like taking screenshots, muting, unmuting, and inserting emojis. Furthermore, users can set unique key combinations for actions typically performed by keyboard shortcuts.
The ChromeOS M123 update also includes smaller enhancements such as the ability to change preferred languages per Android app through “Settings > Apps > Manage your apps > App language,” and an improved text-to-speech feature offering a more natural-sounding voice. This feature supports 31 languages and can be utilized offline.
